Delve into our Kids Election Project

Student Work

Our project went way beyond a tradition research project. Students worked with collaborative partners and ATP classmates across two grades to communicate a common message, "How will each of these political candidates provide solutions to our troubling economy, energy crisis, war in Iraq, and our depletion of our natural resources?"

Students were asked to take their political affiliations or preconceived notions about certain candidates and place them aside to look solely at the state of nation and the presented initiatives from both parties. Some students were surprised at the end of their research, Elluminate sessions, and discussion forums that the candidate they chose originally did not match up with their needs or the needs of our nation. Below is a webshare that demonstrates the students process throughout this project and the technology tools they used to further their purpose and communicate their message.

Culminating Project- Pulling it all Together and Communicating their Message to President-Elect Obama

After listening to all the issues, students selected one issue to develop a media “call to action.” Each student was eager to compose a letter to President-Elect Obama which incorporated their encouragement for him, areas of concern on specific policies presented, and suggestions for implementation or improvement. They tapped into all of the lessons and information gathered by all the collaborative partners to create a visual media presentation using Glogster, a web 2.0 tool, to communicate their message. Below are some examples of student projects:

Students Reflection
Students developed a podcast reflection episode using the Think Pair Share Strategy. Students worked on their reflections individually, then paired up with others to share their reflections. Then students shared their reflection pieces and pulled together their ideas to make their podcast episode flow. Finally, they rehearsed together and refined ideas and offered speaking suggestions. Using this strategy allowed them to communicate ideas clearly. The link below is the podcast created in PodOMatic.

Please Note: There are 3 Podcast Episodes in this Podmatic. Please scroll down to the the KidsElection Project Reflection Episode.
